DRX WINS WORLD 2022
Over the weekend, I was blessed to have witnessed the greatest worlds run of all time.
DRX the 4th seed from the LCK (Korean Regional League) has won the world League of Legend Championship in what most would say was the most competitive worlds tournament to date.
How did they get there:
DRX in the LCK had a negative winrate, and were not going to make it to worlds based on their positioning or the LCK playoff themselves, as they lost in the first round 1-3 to LIV Sandbox. However only the first 3 seeds are determined based off playoff positioning, and since Korean teams did well in previous international endeavors they get to bring 4 teams to worlds, instead of 3 like North America did.
Thus LCK has a regional tournament to determine who will be the 4th seed to play at worlds, and this regional qualifier plays like a gauntlet, meaning DRX would have to beat two teams they have previously lost to, to qualify as the LCk”s fourth seed.
DRX then goes on beat to KT Rolster 3-2, and went to an insane game 5.
DRX then goes on to beat LIV Sandbox 3-2, after loosing to them 1-3 in the playoff, and went to an insane game 5 and they qualify for worlds.
DRX’s run in this regional gautlet was already insane, but many people did not believe in them, as even I certainly did not believe in them. Being 4th seed meant they have to play in the “Play-In” tournament which is the tournament that takes place before group stage of world happens.
In this play in tournament DRX successfully qualified out of it, with a 5-0 record and they were placed in group C. No one thought DRX would quality out of this group because there was TES, the second seed from CHINA who had a players like Knight who was considered the best mid who never won, and JackeyLove a former world champion (2018). The group also had Rogue, the first seed from Europe. However DRX against all odds and thanks to the vietnam team in their group actually beating TES for one of the biggest upsets of the groups, helped DRX quality for quarter finals.
Knockout Stage:
The main story line to follow with DRX wad Deft, an ADC who was playing for 10 years, and this was his last chance to winning worlds as he would have to go into the military next year. He has always made it to worlds but only reached semi-finals once back in 2014, so this was his chance to prove everything.
DRX first quarter final opponent, was none other than previous world champion EDG (2021), the third seed from China. In the series EDG beat DRX 2-0. However things would change. DRX then goes to win the next 3 games in a row and pull off an insane reverse sweep. Zeka, DRX’s midlaner, absolutely popped off game 5 and solo-killed former world champion, Scout (2021), 4 times. DRX shocked the world.
Now DRX went on to face GEN.G the first seed from korea, a team that DRX has never beat ever in the entire year of 2022 in the Semi-Finals. GEN.G also has an insane line up, from CHOVY one of the best new mid-laners in the world and Ruler a former world champion (2017). So game 1 begins and GEN.G takes game 1 in a dominating fashion, people thinks it over as people predicted a 3-0 sweep from GEN.G. However they couldn’t have been more wrong. DRX goes on to win the next 3 games in a row in a decisive fashion, beating GEN.G 3-1 in the most important tournament of the year. Its crazy how DRX have never beat GEN.G in the LCK, but now when everything was on the line, they win 3 games in a row. Absolutely insane.
The Finals:
Now DRX has already made history by being the first team from play-ins to make it to the world finals, and you know who they are up against T1, who has the greatest player of all time, Faker.
Faker has played as long as DEFT has, 10 years, the only difference is that faker has 3 world championships under his belt, 2013, 2015, 2016, and has KERIA what most would say the greatest support player in this era.
I would first like to say that this final series was probably the best series we have ever seen. It was the most competitive, the most mechanical, and the most chaos, leaving the viewer on the edge of their seat as they didn’t know who was going to win. T1 had predicted they would win 3-0, oh how they couldn’t have been more wrong. T1 takes game 1 in a dominating fashion, DRX then goes on to win game 2 in a close 40+ minute game. T1 come back and get back g3. DRX stomp T1 game 4 with Kingen carrying, DRX’s top laner, bringing the series to the final Game 5, which every single fan was hoping for. Then after 40+ minutes of fighting and back and forth. DRX finds a way to kill 3 T1 members and runs for the base and wins it all.
DRX Win worlds 2022, in the best worlds run ever seen to date.
Super happy for Deft, and the rest of the players who pulled off this insane miracle run.
